What To Expect When Expecting Baby Goats and Lambs AND Forage Essentials

Everything you need to know to take care of the pregnant sheep or goat during the last trimester. How to see the signs of labor. How to assist in delivery. What items to pack in a kit for labor and delivery. Care after delivery for baby and mama. How to care for bottle babies. What you need to care for orphaned lambs or baby goats. This class will prepare you for volunteering on this farm during the ‘lambing and kidding season as well as opportunities for fostering and possibly purchasing baby goats and lambs. This is the most popular class of the year!

Good forage is essential to the good health of all livestock – and especially pregnant and nursing ewes and newly weaned lambs. Learn about how to prepare and manage pasture land including the following topics:
-soil testing
-soil preparation
-forage establishment
-forage management
-hay quality
-basics on weed identification and control
Our ‘classroom’ will be a large event tent which will be next to a pasture with pregnant sheep and goats- some due on the day of the event. We will have classroom time as well as hands on (or hands in) depending on the situation! We will also have parts of our workshop on preparing your pasture for your new flock or herd. Hands on learning to take soil samples, identify toxic weeds, even make your own seed germination evaluations! We will have heaters in the tent but dress for the weather and plan to be out in the pastures. Lunch included.
